KST - Koren Specific Technique
Developed by Dr. Tedd Koren DC, who is a pioneer in chiropractic education as well as chiropractic advancements. KST technique is an advanced & improved form of chiropractic spinal care that is extremely unique and versatile in finding and correcting root causes of problems to a person's health. Patients can be more thoroughly analyzed than ever before, with the adjustments holding better and for longer periods of time.
What is Koren Specific Technique? The procedure is made up of three steps (the 3 Cs):
Step One: Challenging
The first step, challenging, is part of the analysis procedure. In a relatively short period of time the entire structural system can be checked: skull, spine, discs, hips, ribs, sternum, shoulders, arms, legs, hands, feet – literally anything that is out of position or misaligned can be analyzed. Challenging structural systems can be done several ways by Dr. Racine or a KST doctor. We can also do the analysis procedure, in different body positions. The patient may be checked standing, laying down, sitting, etc.
Step Two: Checking
The second step, checking, lets the doctor know if certain body parts are in their proper alignment position. The base of the skull (the occiput) can be used as part of the analysis for a neurological reflex biofeedback response. A leg check system of analysis can also be used - if the patient if laying down.
Thus we have a binary biofeedback mechanism (yes/no system) telling us if an area needs or does not need to be corrected or adjusted. This system is akin to muscle testing (in applied kinesiology or AK) - wherein a muscle will become weak when confronted with a negative biofeedback impulse. Basically - this method of analysis, allows Dr. Racine to be very specific... and without guessing whether a bone or joint needs alignment or not. Dr. Racine uses the body like a computer sort of speak, to get a 'bio feedback' answer to certain checks. In a nutshell - it is a form of using the patient's own body... to tell the doctor - where to treat & how. It is hard to explain in words, but a fascinating way of treating and correcting spinal and neurological problems that hinder a person's health.
Step Three: Correcting
Correcting, step three. When an adjustment is needed, the body part or area is corrected and adjusted using the Arthrostim™ adjusting instrument.
The ArthroStim™ is an FDA approved instrument developed by IMPAC technology in Oregon. It has been continuously refined and perfected over its 22-year history. It introduces a low force, high speed to the body to realign segments and remove nerve pressure at a speed of 12 "taps" per second (12 hertz). It is a fast, gentle, accurate, low force and controlled adjustment.
The ArthroStim™ gives patients a very state-of-the-art instrument that allows the doctor to be very precise and accurate in the adjustment. There is NEVER any twisting, turning or "cracking" of bones or joints.
This technique permits adjusting you, the patient, in different postures & positions.
This is very important because sometimes a problem can only be 'reproduced' in a certain position or posture.
For example, a driver in a car accident (sitting) may not totally reveal their spinal damage or subluxations when standing or laying down - therefore if they are analyzed and corrected in the seated position, the body seems to correct itself faster & more efficiently.
Another example, a golfer. We can actually replicate the (patient) doing a golf swing, and at times, certain misalignments (subluxations) will reveal themselves during that body position... and not necessarily if the person was checked standing, sitting, or laying down.
Again - Dr. Racine can get very specific and accurate, which means better and quicker results for the patient!
How Should A Patient Feel?
Most people report a feeling of ease, relaxation and well-being as their structural nerve stress (subluxations) is released and/or diminished. Most of the time - the person will feel more balanced, straighter, and basically feel their pain go away!
Some people literally report that their pain goes away 'during' the treatment! Of course - everyone is different.
The next day some people feel as if they've had a good workout, and can be a little sore (often in places they may might not have expected). This soreness is part of the healing process and body re-alignment, and is very natural. It is usually felt only after the first one or two adjustments; is temporary and usually disappears within a short time.
People have many layers of traumas to their body and many layers of 'problems'.
After the treatment corrections are made to the body at the time - older injuries, older distortions, older subluxations and older symptoms (both physical and emotional) may surface to release. The release and healing of old injuries is known as "retracing" and is usually part of the healing process. You may think of retracing almost like your body 'rewinding' like a VCR tape. Or as an analogy - think of an onion. An onion has many layers. As you peel the top layer, there's another layer just beneath. With KST... Dr. Racine can work through many layers in order for you to get truly well!
On occasion patients have reported "cleansing" symptoms such as diarrhea, headache, nausea, etc. - as toxins leave the body and the body starts to heal itself. The power that made the body, can heal the body. These symptoms are usually temporary; minutes or hours typically. Again - this is part of natural true healing and is not a bad thing.
